Grants for cultural-historical environments
Do you look after a cultural environment so that it is preserved for the future? Or are you working towards making a cultural environment more accessible and useful? You can apply for a grant for this from the County Administrative Board.
The e-services and forms of the County Administrative Board in this field are not available in English. If you wish to submit an application or notification, you may contact the County Administrative Board, which can inform you how to proceed.
Culturally and historically valuable buildings, environments and landscapes are common sources of knowledge and experiences. You can apply for a grant from the County Administrative Board if you look after a cultural environment in such a way that it is preserved for the future or if you make it more accessible and useful for everyone.
Grants for the management of valuable cultural environments
A national goal is that there should be a diversity of cultural environments, buildings and facilities that are preserved, used and developed. Every year, the state allocates money for cultural environmental protection. What the money may be used for is specified in the Ordinance on grants for the management of valuable cultural environments.
As someone who owns or manages a culturally and historically valuable building or environment, you can apply for a grant from the County Administrative Board.
We can provide grants for:
- looking after cultural-historical buildings and environments that are already protected as architectural monuments, cultural reserves or are part of a so-called national interest in cultural environmental care;
- looking after valuable cultural environments that provide a special understanding of historical contexts or that have special local or regional significance;
- projects that make cultural environments more accessible and useful for everyone.
Grants for architectural preservation
If you are going to look after or restore a culturally and historically valuable building or environment, it can involve extra costs. You can apply for a grant if, for example, you need to use a special material or a special building method to preserve the cultural-historical value.
Grants for care of cultural landscapes and ancient monuments
You can apply for a grant for the care and maintenance of a cultural landscape or an ancient monument if it involves extra costs for the materials or methods required to preserve cultural-historical values. This can apply, for example, when repairing a milestone or mowing grass on a burial ground.
Grants for increased accessibility and knowledge of valuable cultural environments
If you improve accessibility so that it is easier for everyone to experience a valuable cultural environment, you can apply for a grant. We can also provide support for projects that aim to spread knowledge about historical events or processes conveyed by a building or an environment.
Examples of measures that are eligible for grants:
- adaptation of the physical environment for accessibility
- creation of a knowledge base
- putting up information signs.

This is how we assess your application
An application is reviewed either by the County Administrative Board or by the Swedish National Heritage Board. In the review, we also assess the property owner’s own efforts and opportunity to manage the cultural-historical values in the long term.
Hire an antiquarian expert
When we provide grants for the management of valuable cultural environments, it is often with the condition that the measures must be implemented with the participation of an antiquarian. An antiquarian expert must then follow the work and ensure that it is carried out in a way that preserves the cultural-historical value. The expert you hire must meet our requirements for competence, experience, and suitability.
The expert’s tasks are to:
- follow the work and give instructions,
- document the work,
- after completion of work, compile a report on the measures.
