Transport of animals and animal by-products and animal by-products

When animals are transported, they must be transported in a safe manner and the animals must not be subjected to injury or suffering during transport. The County Administrative Board checks animal transport, from transporting pets in cars, to transportation of animal by-products. We also inspect transport vehicles that are going to transport animals.

The County Administrative Board can carry out checks when you, for example, transport farm animals to a slaughterhouse, horses to a competition, cats to the cat sitter or dog to the forest for a long walk. The Country Administrative Board also check that the drivers that need permission and certificates of competence have them, and that the documentation follows the transport.

Inspecting animal transports

All persons transporting animals as a part of economic activity must inspect their vehicle with the County Administrative Board. In some cases, you as a private person may have to inspect your vehicle. You can find more information on what is an economic activity with the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket).

During an inspection, the County Administrative Board will, among other things check that:

• there is no risk of injury
• the transport is sustainable and adapted to the type of animal to be transported
• the ventilation is sufficient
• the vehicle is correctly marked for animal transport.

Transport and handling of animal by-products

The County Administrative Board inspects the transport and certain handling of animal by-products (e.g. dead animals and slaughterhouse waste). To transport such material, you must be registered with the Swedish Board of Agriculture.
