Selling and preserving wild plants and animals
Planning to preserve animals or plants? Or trade in live animals and plants? To do so, you will need to apply for permission from the County Administrative Board.
You need a permit to preserve (taxidermy) wild animals and plants professionally or for profit, and to trade in live wild animals and plants.
- Professional purposes are when your activity covers a certain scope and duration. Furthermore, the business activity is for profit and independent.
- Commercial purposes are when your activity provides some form of economic benefit, i.e. the activity is for profit.
The e-services and forms of the County Administrative Board in this field are not available in English. If you wish to submit an application or notification, you may contact the County Administrative Board, which can inform you how to proceed.
Permit for taxidermy/preservation
You must have a permit to professionally or commercially preserve whole or parts of wild animals and plants. Preservation includes taxidermy (stuffing animals) or conserving plants and animals.
A permit is required for the following species:
- wild birds living in the EU
- wild mammal species living in Sweden
- animals and plants marked with n or N in the Annex to the Species Protection Ordinance
- animals and plants listed in Annex A or B of the CITES Regulation.
Permit for trading
You must have a permit to professionally or commercially trade in live endangered plant and animal species, as well as all live wild bird species in Europe.
This applies to, for example, pet shops and zoos, but may also include private individuals breeding and selling species on a larger scale.
A permit is required for the following:
- Live birds and eggs with embryos of wild European species
- Live animals and plants marked with N or n in Annex 1 of the Species Protection Ordinance
- Live animals and plants listed in Annex A or B of the CITES Regulation.
