Do we reach the environmental objectives?
The County Administrative Board supervises environmental development and follows up on national environmental objectives by using different indicators.
Every year, the County Administrative Board, assesses whether the counties will meet the set environmental objectives. Our assessments are, among other things, based on sampling, investigations, indicators, and knowledge about the environment in the county.
Follow-up on environmental targets
Each environmental objective is followed-up by using multiple indicators. These indicators support our assessment, but are also used in order to be able to provide information about the environmental development.
To measure and follow-up on the conditions of the environment, and the affect of environmental efforts, indicators are used. The indicators are based on data and results from samplings and investigations that have been processed to monitor progress from year to year.
Every year, we assess how likely it is that the environmental objectives are met 2020. We see a lot of good environmental efforts, but the progress is too slow. Several environmental objectives will not be met. The follow-up is carried out in all counties, and the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency compiles the regional results in a national assessment, which is then the basis for the Swedish environmental policy.
To meet the environmental objectives, we need to implement various efforts in a well-structured manner. Each county is working with various regional programs to ensure that this is happening.
Environmental monitoring as a support
We supervise environmental development through regular investigations, so called environmental monitoring. Among other things, environmental monitoring includes sampling in waters, and inventory of animals and plants. The results from the environmental monitoring are used to assess environmental impact and development, and to assess the feasibility of meeting set environmental objectives.
Regional work
We work with many aspects relevant to environmental objectives. Every year, we compile our knowledge and perform an analysis of the current conditions: are the targets met, what does the development look like, and what needs to be done? The results are then used by the Government and Parliament and form a basis for how to continue to tackle environmental issues.
What is RUS?
RUS is a collaboration committee, which aims at supporting, guiding, and coordinating the County Administrative Boards’ work and regional efforts in the environmental management system. The abbreviation is short for Regional Development and Collaboration in the environmental management system.
RUS is responsible for the County Administrative Boards’ common tasks, and the coordination between various actors, including national authorities and municipalities. RUS work applies to tasks related to the total environmental objective assignment, both follow-up, objectives and implemented work efforts.
