The county of Västmanland is a part of the Stockholm-Mälar region and is situated west of Stockholm. 2,9 million people live in this region: a third of the population in Sweden.
Västmanland county has almost 250 000 inhabitants. The area is 5 691 km2, with 48 inhabitants per km2. The county consists of 10 municipalities; Arboga, Fagersta, Hallstahammar, Kungsör, Köping, Norberg, Sala, Skinnskatteberg, Surahammar and Västerås.
About 50 % of the inhabitants live in the capital city Västerås, which is the sixth largest municipality in Sweden, about 100 km from Stockholm.
The transport system is well developed. Around lake Mälaren thera are express trains which have considerably reduced the travelling time for many who commute. Västerås is only 53 minutes by train from Stockholm. In Västmanland there is one international airport in Västerås with connections to Copenhagen, London, Oslo, Göteborg and Malmö. Arlanda International Airport is only one hour away. Several nation highways, such as the E18 and E20, run through the county. There are two ports in the county: one in Köping and one in Västerås. Västerås is the largest inland port in Scandinavia.
Västmanland is known for its varying and prolific nature and its interesting and wellpreserved industrial sites and castles. Västmanland has always been open to the outside world. In the 15th and 16th centuries immigrants brought with them the knowledge of commerce, and international trade has been an important part of the county´s economy since teh Middle Ages.
