BECOSI - Benchmarking On Contaminated Sites

The BECOSI project focuses on work with contaminated sites, carried out by environmental authorities in Estonia, Finland, Latvia and Sweden.

The industrial heritage of the Central Baltic countries has caused countless areas with contamination in soil, buildings, groundwater and surface water. Authorities have broadly three means of protecting citizens and environment form the hazards of contaminated sites; supervision that will result in remediation, spatial planning that will guide landowners towards remediation measures, and information that will help people protect themselves.

The goal of the BECOSI-project is to benefit a healthier and more environmentally friendly Central Baltic region by improving the work skills connected to contaminated sites administration.

The three work packages, “More efficient supervision and enforcement”, “Contaminated sites in spatial planning” and “Information as a tool in managing contaminated sites”, are the areas we will work with by carrying out a broad range of activities during the project time.

The project runs over three years from December 2010 until November 2013 and is financed through EU:s Central Baltic Interreg IV A programme.
